About Us
Many elements of racing have evolved over generations and, even more so, in recent years as the proliferation of the “mega stables” leave a footprint on the industry but one thing that hasn’t changed is the reward for the trainer with an attention to detail.
THE TRAINER
Scott Cameron
Flemington-based Scott Cameron is a horseman who was destined to follow his steep family history into the sport and, with the support of his late father Russell, became a third-generation trainer and he makes no secret of his desire to maintain a smaller stable and provide one-on-one attention to his horses and clients.
Scott worked closely with his father from the time he was a teenager, experiencing stable life not only in Melbourne but also internationally in the Asian racing hub of Macau and in New Zealand before returning to Australia.
“From the get-go I always wanted to get into it. When I was 14 in New Zealand, I started riding work for dad before I went to school,” Scott says.
“When dad got sick I took over the stable when it was still in his name at Flemington and then I was in a partnership with him for a couple of years and then the last three years I have been training in my own right.”
A talented track rider, that skill allows Scott to be hands-on and that is how he manages his boutique stable of horses at Victoria’s premier city training facility.
“Dad was in Macau for a little bit as well when I was 12 and 13 and I would go to the stables there and watch trackwork as well,” he said.
“New Zealand was definitely different to how they train in Australia. I have also been fortunate enough to have a lot of good trainers stay with us for the Melbourne carnivals, so I have been able to see what they do and what they do differently.
“That has been a great education for me. From that, I’ve been able to take little things on board from each person.”
Cameron’s father Russell and grandfather Ted were well-known for their ability to peak a horse and pull off a betting coup from time to time. The betting markets, too, have changed and racing is now far more transparent but Scott is not afraid to set a horse for a race when the right circumstances arise.
“I try to help owners earn some sort of money out of a plunge, but now is a lot different to back in the day when you didn’t have to trial them and no one really saw the jump outs,” he says.
“My goal is to ensure that the horses are racing consistently and, as long as they are doing that, and I can maintain a good strike-rate I will be happy.”
